City and Country, I meant to Do My Work

[শহর ও গ্রাম, ভেবেছিলেম কাজ করি]

City and Country    Lessons 1-2

A. Listen, read and say (শোন, পড় এবং বলো).

City streets and country roads (শহরের রাস্তা ও গ্রামের পথ)

The city has streets (শহরে আছে রাস্তা)-

But the country has roads (কিন্তু গ্রামে আছে পথ).

In the country one meets (গ্রামে যে কেউ দেখতে পায়)

Blue carts with their loads (নীল গাড়িভড়া বোঝা)

Of sweet-smelling hay (মিষ্টি ঘ্রাণের খড়),

And mangolds, and grain (এবং সবজি, আর ফসলের).

Oh, take me away (ওহ, নিয়ে চল আমায়)

To the country again (আমার সেই গাঁয়ে)!

In the city one sees (শহরে একজন দেখে)

Big trams rattle by (বড় ট্রামগাড়ি ঘর্ঘর করে),

And the breath of the chimneys (আর চিমনীর নিশ্বাস)

That blot out the sky (যা কালো কালিমায় আকাশ ভোরে তোলে).

And all down the pavements (আর সকল ফুটপাতে)

Stiff lamp-posts one sees (খাড়া ল্যাম্পপোস্ট যে কেউ দেখতে পায়)­

But the country has hedgerows (কিন্তু গ্রামে আছে ঝোপঝাড়ের বেড়া),

The country has trees (গ্রামে আছে গাছপালা).

As sweet as the sun (যখন সূর্যালোকের মতন মিষ্টি)

In the country is rain (গ্রামাঞ্চলের বৃষ্টি):

Oh, take me away (ওহ, নিয়ে চলো আমায়)

To the country again (আবার সেই গাঁয়)!

B. Read the poem aloud (কবিতাটি জোরে জোরে পড়). Use correct stress and intonation (সঠিক জোর ও স্বরভঙ্গি ব্যবহার করো).

Answer: Do yourself with your teacher’s help (শিক্ষকের সাহায্য নিয়্যে নিজেরা করো).

C. Groupwork (দলগত কাজ). Read the poem again (কবিতাটি আবার পড়). Answer the questions (প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দাও).

1. Does the author of the poem prefer the country or the city (কবিতার রচয়িতা কি গ্রাম বা শহর পছন্দ করেন)? How do you know (তুমি কিভাবে জানলে)? Underline the lines in the poem that tells you the answer (কবিতার লাইনগুলি আন্ডারলাইন কর যা তোমাকে উত্তরটি বলে).

Answer:

The author prefers the country (লেখক গ্রাম বেশিই পছন্দ করেন). It is known through her preference for carts, smell of hay, mangolds and grain and hedgerows to trams the smoke of chimneys and lamp-posts respectively (এটা তার ট্রাম, চিমনীর ধোঁয়া ও ল্যাম্প-পোস্টের চেয়ে যথাক্রমে গরুর গাড়ি, খড়, সবজি ও ফসলের গ্রান এবং ঝোপের বেড়ার প্রতি পছন্দ থেকে জানা যায়). This thought of the poet is exposed in these lines (কবির এই চিন্তা এই লাইনগুলিতে প্রকাশিত হয়):

1. In the country one meets

Blue carts with their loads

Of sweet-smelling hay,

And mangolds, and grain.

2. In the city one sees

Big trams rattle by,

And the breath of the chimneys

That blot out the sky.

And all down the pavements

Stiff lamp-posts one sees­

But the country has hedgerows,

The country has trees .

2. Do you prefer the city or the country (তুমি শহর নাকি গ্রাম বেশী পছন্দ কর)? Why (কেন)?

Answer:

I prefer the city (আমি শহর বেশি পছন্দ করি). Because we do not get in country life facilities that we get in city life (কারন শহুরে জীবনে আমরা যেসব সুযোগ-সুবিধা পাই, সেগুলো গ্রাম্য জীবনে পাই না). For good living, education and recreation, city life is better than country life (ভালো জীবন-যাপন, লেখাপড়া ও বিনোদনের জন্য শহুরে জীবন গ্রাম্য জীবনের চেয়ে ভালো).

D. Read the poem again (কবিতাটি আবার পড়). Make two lists, one of things you can see in the country and the other of the things you can see in the city (দুটি তালিকা তৈরি কর, একটি জিনিস যা তুমি দেশে দেখতে পার এবং অন্যটি তুমি শহরে দেখতে পার).

Answer:

I meant to do my work today (ভেবেছিলেম আজ কাজ করি)-

But a brown bird sang in the apple-tree (কিন্তু বাদামি একটি পাখি গেয়ে উঠল আপেলের গাছে),

And a butterfly flitted across the field (আর এক প্রজাপতি উড়ে গেল মাঠ বরাবর),

And all the leaves were calling me (আর গাছের যত পাতা ডাক দিল আমাকে তারপর).

 

And the wind went sighing over the land (আর হাওয়া উড়ে গেল মাটির উপর দিয়ে দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে),

Tossing the grasses to and fro (সব ঘাসকে এফোর-ওফোর করে তুলে),

And a rainbow held out its shining hand (আর এক রংধনু মেলে দিল তার জ্যোতির্ময় হাত)­

So what could I do but laugh and go (তাই কী আর করব শুধু হাসা আর পথ হাঁটা ছাড়া)?

2. What was the butterfly doing (প্রজাপতিটি কি করছিল)?

3. What were the leaves doing (পাতাগুলো কি করছিল)?

4. What did the rainbow do (রংধনু কী করেছিল)?

Answer:

1. The bird was singing (পাখিটি গান গাইছিল).

2. The butterfly was flitting across the field (প্রজাপতিটি মাঠ জুড়ে ফুরফুর করে উড়ছিল).

3. The leaves were calling the poet (পাতাগুলি কবিকে ডাকছিল).

4. The rainbow held out its shining hand (রংধনুটি তার উজ্জ্বল হাতটি মেলে রেখেছিল).

H. Groupwork (দলীয় কাজ). Read the poem again (কবিতাটি আবার পড়). Discuss the questions (প্রশ্নগুলো আলোচনা কর).

1. What did the poet want to do (কবি কী করতে চেয়েছিলেন)?

2. What did the poet actually do in the end (কবি শেষ পর্যন্ত আসলে কী করলেন)? Why do you think he did this (তুমি কেন মনে কর যে তিনি এটি করেছেন)?

3. Think about the poem on page 70 and this poem (৭০ পৃষ্ঠার কবিতা এবং এই কবিতাটি সম্পর্কে চিন্তা কর). Do the poets have similar or different opinions about the country (কবিদের কি গ্রাম সম্পর্কে একই রকম বা ভিন্ন মত আছে)? Why do you think so (তুমি কেন এমন মনে কর)?

Answer:

Mina: Let’s discuss (চল আলোচনা করি). What did the poet want to do (কবি কী করতে চেয়েছিলেন)?

Raju: I think he wanted to do some chores (আমি মনে করি তিনি কিছু টুকিটাকি কাজ করতে চেয়েছিলেন).

Mitu: I don’t think so (আমি এমনটি মনে করি না). Probably he wanted to compose poems (সম্ভবত তিনি কবিতা রচনা করতে চেয়েছিলেন).

Mina: Ok (ঠিক আছে). Then what did the poet actually do in the end (শেষ পর্যন্ত কবি আসলে কী করলেন?)? And why do you think so (এবং তুমি কেন এমন মনে কর)?

Raju: I think he was lost in imagination (আমি মনে করি তিনি কল্পনায় হারিয়ে গেছেন).

Mitu: Why (কেন)?

Raju: His words reveal this fact (তার কথাগুলো এই সত্যকে প্রকাশ করে).

Mina: I think he started to compose poems (আমি মনে করি তিনি কবিতা রচনা করতে শুরু করেছিলেন). Because he found his theme in nature (কারণ তিনি প্রকৃতিতে তার বিষয় খুঁজে পেয়েছিলেন).

Raju: Now, what do you think whether our two poets have similar or different opinions about the country (এখন, আমাদের দুই কবি গ্রাম সম্পর্কে অভিন্ন না ভিন্ন অভিমত দেন বলে তোমারা মনে করো)?

Mina: I think they give different opinions (আমি মনে করি তারা বিভিন্ন মতামত দেন). Mr Gallienne gives priority on natural beauty of the country while Ms Farjeon describes its calmness (মিঃ গ্যালিয়েন দেশের প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যকে অগ্রাধিকার দেন যখন মিস ফারজন তার প্রশান্তি বর্ণনা করেন).

Raju: I think they have similar opinions (আমি মনে করি তাদের একই রকম মতামত রয়েছে). Both of them uphold its beauty (উভয়েই এর সৌন্দর্য তুলে ধরেছেন).
