Find Your Word – শব্দ খুঁজে বের কর

A. Read the dialogue (সংলাপটি পড়).

Teacher : Students, do you have a dictionary (ছাত্রছাত্রীরা, তোমাদের কি কোন অভিধান আছে)?

Rupa : Yes, miss, I have one (হ্যাঁ, মিস, আমার একটা আছে).

Ananda : I have one too (আমারও একটা আছে).

Teacher : Do you know how to look up a word in a dictionary (তোমরা কী জানো কীভাবে অভিধান থেকে একটি শব্দ খুঁজে বের করতে হয়)?

Rupa : Not really (প্রকৃতপক্ষে না). It often takes a long time to find the meaning of a word in a dictionary (প্রায়ই অভিধান থেকে একটি শব্দ খুঁজে বের করতে দীর্ঘ সময় লাগে).

Teacher : How about you, Ananda (আনন্দ, তোমার কি অবস্থা)?

Ananda : Same with me (আমারও একই ব্যাপার). I often get confused (আমি প্রায়ই দ্বিধাগ্রস্থ হয়ে পরি). So many words, so many sign, ohh (এত শব্দাবলি, এত চিহ্ন, উহ)!

Teacher : It’s because you haven’t learned how to look up a word quickly in a dictionary (এটির কারন হলো, তোমরা জানো না কীভাবে অভিধান থেকে দ্রুত একটি শব্দ খুঁজে বের করতে হয়).

Rupa, Ananda : How can we do it, teacher (কীভাবে এটা আমরা করব, শিক্ষিকা)?

Teacher : Ok, let’s start with a page from a dictionary (ঠিক আছে, চল অভিধানের একটা পাতা থেকে শুরু করি).

B. Look at a dictionary page (অভিধানের একটি পৃষ্ঠা দেখ).

C. Make a list of the letters/words in bold (মোটা অক্ষরে লেখা বর্ণগুলো/শব্দাবলির একটি তালিকা তৈরি কর). Answer the following questions (নিন্মের প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দাও).

b. What is the first letter and word in the left hand corner (বাম দিকের কোনায় প্রথম বর্ণ ও শব্দ কোনটি)?

Answer:

a. I see a letter ‘B’ is written in bold at the left corner of the dictionary page (আমি দেখি একটি ইংরেজি বর্ণমালা ‘B’ মোটা অক্ষরে অভিধানের পাতার বাম কোনায় লেখা রয়েছে).

b. The first letter is ‘B’ and the first word is ‘BA’ (প্রথম বর্ণটি B এবং প্রথম শব্দটি BA).

D. Read the text about how the dictionary page has been written (অভিধান পৃষ্ঠা কীভাবে লেখা হয়েছে এ বিষয়ে পাঠ্যাংশটি পড়).

The teacher asks the class, ‘’Have you noticed that the words in bold are written one after another (শিক্ষক শ্রেনীকক্ষের শিক্ষার্থীদের জিজ্ঞাসা করেন, তোমরা কি লক্ষ করেছ যে মোটা অক্ষরে শব্দগুলো একটির পর আরেকটি লেখা হয়েছে)? Ok (ঠিক আছে). Do you find any rule or system or order in arranging these words (তোমরা কি শব্দগুলো সাজানো ক্ষেত্রে কোনো নিয়ম অথবা পদ্ধতি অথবা ধারা দেখতে পেয়েছ)?’’

Rupa : Yes, teacher (হ্যাঁ, শিক্ষক). The page starts with a single letter B and slowly words come below this letter (পৃষ্ঠাটি একটি একক বর্ণ B দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে এবং এই বর্ণের পর আস্তে আস্তে শব্দগুলো এসেছে).

Teacher : Thank you, Rupa (ধন্যবাদ তোমাকে, রূপা). You’ve got it (তুমি বুঝতে পেরেছ)! Let me write B and some of the words from this page on the board (এখন আমি বোর্ডে B এবং এই পৃষ্ঠা হতে কতগুলো শব্দ লিখে নেই). Then I’ll show you how they are written one after another like in the alphabet (তারপর আমি তোমাদের দেখাব কীভাবে বর্ণগুলো একের পর এক বর্ণমালা অনুসারে এসেছে). Look at the board and ask me if it is clear or not (বোর্ডের দিকে তাকাও এবং বোঝা যায় কিনা তা আমাকে বল). OK (ঠিক আছে)?

E. Arrange the following words in alphabetic order (নিন্মের শব্দগুলোকে বর্ণমালার ক্রমানুসারে সাজাও).

F. Look at the dictionary page again (অভিধান পাতাটি পুনরায় দেখ). Discuss in groups and find out the following information about BA, baby and bachelor (দলগতভাবে আলোচনা কর এবং নিচের BA, baby, bachelor সম্পর্কে তথ্যগুলো খুঁজে বের কর).

-meaning of words (শব্দগুলোর অর্থ).

-Spelling (বানান).

-Example of use/example sentences (ব্যবহারিক উদাহরন/উদাহরনসহ বাক্যসমূহ).

-Grammatical information (ব্যকরণগত তথ্য).

-Formal/informal (বিধিসম্মত/বিধিহীন).

-Abbreviations (সংক্ষিপ্ত রুপসমূহ).

Abul : We think dictionary is an important tool for the learners [আমরা মনে করি অভিধান শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সরঞ্জাম]. It provides us the details of the words [এটি আমাদের শব্দ সম্পর্কে পূর্ণাঙ্গ ধারণা দেয়].

Bashar : You are right [ঠিক ধরেছ]. Look at the given page of dictionary [অভিধানের প্রদত্ত পৃষ্ঠাটি লক্ষ কর]. There is a word ‘BA’ (এখানে BA নামক শব্দ আছে). It stands for Bachelor of Arts [এটি bachelor of arts বোঝায়].

Ram : Let’s talk about the word ‘baby’ [এসো আমরা baby শব্দটি নিয়ে কথা বলি]. It means a very young child or animal [এটি ছোট বাচ্চা বা প্রাণী বোঝায়]. Its plural form is ‘babies’ [এর বহুবচন babies]. Abul : The word ‘bachelor’ has two meanings [bachelor শব্দটির দুটি অর্থ আছে]. One stands for unmarried person [একটি দিয়ে অবিবাহিত কোনো ব্যক্তিকে বোঝায়]. The other means a person who has a bachelor degree (a first university degree) [অন্য অর্থ দিয়ে কোন ব্যক্তি যার স্নাতক ডিগ্রি (বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ১ম ডিগ্রি) বুঝায়].
