Find Your Chapter – অধ্যায় খুঁজে বের কর

A. Listen and read (শোন এবং পড়).

Rupa : So…Ananda, we had a helpful class on dictionary, didn’t we (সুতরাং---আনন্দ, অভিধানের উপর আমাদের একটি সহায়ক ক্লাস হয়েছিল, তাই নয় কি)?

Ananda : Oh, yes, very helpful (ও, হ্যাঁ, খুবই সহায়ক). This is why I like Mrs Baruna’s class (এই জন্যই মিসেস বড়ুয়ার ক্লাস খুব পছন্দ করি). She is one of my favourite teachers (তিনি আমার প্রিয় শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে অন্যতম).

Rupa : She is (তিনি)! I also like her very much (আমিও তাকে খুব পছন্দ করি). And she is very organised (এবং তিনি খুবই গোছালো). She knows how to make us work in groups and pairs (তিনি জানেন কীভাবে আমাদেরকে দিয়ে দলগত বা যুগ্মভাবে কাজ করাতে হয়). So we are never bored (আই আমরা কখনো বিরিক্ত হই না).

Ananda : By the way, I’ve another problem (যাই হোক, আমার আরও একটি সমস্যা আছে). Do you understand the ‘Table of Contents’ at the beginning of a book (তুমি কি বইয়ের শুরুতে ‘সূচিপত্রের তালিকা’ বুঝতে পার)?

Rupa : Hmmm…yes, I’ve learnt it from my elder sister (হ্যাঁ, আমি এটি আমার বড় বোনের কাছ থেকে শিখেছি). I can try to explain it to you if you like (যদি তুমি চাও তাহলে আমি এটি ব্যাখ্যা করার চেষ্টা করতে পারি).

Ananda : So nice of you (তুমি খুব ভালো). I really need it (সত্যিই আমার এটা জানা দরকার).

B. Work in pairs (দ্বৈতভাবে কাজ কর). Discuss when and how you can help each other with anything difficult in a lesson (কোন পাঠে সমস্যা হলে একজন আরেকজনকে কখন এবং কীভাবে সাহায্য করতে পারে তা আলোচনা কর).

Answer:

Nayan : What do you do when you find anything difficult in a lesson (তুমি যখন কোনো পাঠে দুর্বোধ্য কিছু পাও তখন কী কর)?

Opu : If any problem arises, I discuss it with my friends and solve it immediately (যদি কোন সমস্যার উদয় হয়, আমি এটি আমার বন্ধুদের সাথে আলোচনা করি এবং সাথে সাথে সমাধান করে ফেলি).

Nayan : Do you think it is effective enough (তুমি কি মনে কর এটা যথেষ্ট কার্যকর)?

Opu : Of course (অবশ্যই). I often face difficulty in Mathematics (আমি প্রায়ই গণিতে সমস্যায় পড়ি). Then I take help from some of my friends who are good at Mathematics (তখন আমি আমার কিছু বিন্ধুদের থেকে সাহায্য নেই যারা গনিতে দক্ষ).

Nayan : Don’t they ask for help from you (তারা কি তোমার থেকে সাহায্য চায় না)?

Opu : Why not (কেন নয়)? I often help them understand grammatical rules (আমি প্রায়ই তাদের ব্যাকরণের নিয়ম বুঝাতে সাহায্য করি).

Nayan : I think, I should also join you (আমি মনে করি, আমারও তোমাদের সাথে যোগ দেয়া উচিৎ ). This way we can help each other anything difficult in a lesson (এইভাবে আমরা একে অপরকে পাঠের কোনো দূর্বোধ্য বিষয়ে সাহায্য করতে পারি).

Opu : Yes, of course (হ্যাঁ, অবশ্যই). You are always welcome (তোমাকে সবসময় স্বাগতম).

Nayan : Thank you (তোমাকে ধন্যবাদ).

C. Read a content page of a book below individually and work in pairs to answer the questions that follow (নিচের একটি বইয়ের একটি সূচিপত্র এককভাবে পড় এবং পরের প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দেওয়ার জন্য যুগলভাবে কাজ কর).

Questions:

1. How many subject / topics do you see here (এখানে তুমি কতগুলো বিষয় দেখেছ)?

2. What do the numbers on the right-hand side mean (ডানদিকের সংখ্যাগুলো দিয়ে কি বোঝানো হয়েছে)?

3. Who do you think the people whose names are written after the subjects or topics are (তুমি এসব লোক সম্পর্কে কি মনে কর যাদের নাম বিষয়/আলোচ্য বিষয়ের নিচে লেখা আছে)?

4. What is each topic / subject called (প্রত্যেক বিষয়কে কি বলা হয়)?

Answer:

Myself : How many subject / topics do you see here (এখানে তুমি কতগুলো বিষয় দেখেছ)?

Nipa : I see six topics here (আমি এখানে ছয়টি বিষয় দেখতে পাই).

Myself : What do the numbers on the right-hand side mean (ডানদিকের সংখ্যাগুলো দিয়ে কি বোঝানো হয়েছে)?

Nipa : The numbers on the right-hand side mean that a particular topic begins from the page of the book mentioned on the right-hand (ডানদিকের সংখ্যাগুলো দ্বারা বোঝানো হয় যে, একটি নির্দিষ্ট বিষয় শুরু হয় বইয়ের ঐ পৃষ্ঠা হতে যা ডানদিকে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে).

Myself : Who do you think the people whose names are written after the subjects or topics are (তুমি এসব লোক সম্পর্কে কি মনে কর যাদের নাম বিষয়/আলোচ্য বিষয়ের নিচে লেখা আছে)?

Nipa : I think that people whose names are written after the subjects or topics are the writer of them (আমি মনে করি, যে সকল লোকের নাম বিষয়গুলোর নিচে লিখিত হয়েছে তারা এগুলোর লেখক).

Myself : What is each topic / subject called (প্রত্যেক বিষয়কে কি বলা হয়)?

Nipa : Each topic/subject is called contents (প্রতিটি শিরোনাম/বিষয়কে সূচিপত্র বলা হয়).

D. Fill in the gaps with appropriate words from the box (বক্স হতে উপযুক্ত শব্দ নিয়ে শূন্যস্থান পূরন কর).

read - পড়া and - এবং books -বইগুলো are - হয় topic - বিষয় of - এর book - বই only - কেবলমাত্র which - কোন is - হয়

The text above is a table ____  contents. It shows what subjects ___ there in a ____, journal, magazine or in a research paper. So what is included in a book ___ shown in its table of contents. The table also shows a reader what the ______ are, who the writer are, and _____ page a reader should open to ____ a particular topic. Sometimes in some ____, topics are organised first in units _____ then in lessons. However, some books ____show the chapters.

Answer:

The text above is a table of contents (উপরের পাঠটি একটি সূচিপত্রের সারনি). It shows what subjects are there in a book, journal, magazine or in a research paper (এটি কোন বই, সাময়িকী, সাময়িক পত্রিকা অথবা গবেষনা পত্রে কোন কোন বিষয় রয়েছে তা এটি দেখায়). So what is included in a book is shown in its table of contents (সুতরাং সূচিপত্রে দেখানো হয় একটি বইয়ে কি কি অন্তর্ভুক্ত আছে). The table also shows a reader what the topics are, who the writer are, and which page a reader should open to read a particular topic (এই তালিকা পাঠককে আরও দেখায় বিষয়বস্তু কী, লেখকবৃন্দ কারা এবং নির্দিষ্ট কোনো বিষয় পড়তে হলে একজন পাঠককে কোন পৃষ্ঠা খুলতে হবে). Sometimes in some books, topics are organised first in units and then in lessons (মাঝে মাঝে কিছু বইয়ে আলোচ্য বিষয়গুলোকে সাজানো হয় প্রথমে ইউনিট এবং পরে পাঠ অনুসারে). However, some books only show the chapters (যা হোক, কিছু বই শুধু অধ্যায় দেখায় ).

E. Go to the text in the box at Section C and answer the following questions (C অংশে বক্সের ভিতরের পূলপাঠ দেখ এবং নিচের প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দাও).

2. Which chapter is written by Naomi Shihab Nye (নাউমি শিহাব নায়ি কর্তৃক কোন অধ্যায়টি লেখা হয়েছে)?

3. What is the page number for Sea to Shining Sea (Sea to Shining Sea এর পৃষ্ঠা নম্বর কত)?

4. What does Robert Olen Butler write (রবার্ট ওলেন বাটলার কী লিখেছেন)?

5. What is the chapter at page 57, and who is the writer (সাতান্ন নম্বর পৃষ্ঠাটি কোন অধ্যায়ের এবং এটির লেখক কে)?

Answer:

1. Sean T. Kelly is the writer of America at Play (সেন টি. কেলি হলো America at play এর লেখক ).

2. ‘Our Town’ is written by Naomi Shihab Nye (নাউমি শিহান নী দ্বারা Our Town লেখা হয়েছে).

3. 117 is the page number for ‘Sea to Shining Sea’ (১১৭ হলো sea to shining sea এর পৃষ্ঠা নম্বর).

4. ‘Health and Home’ is written by Robert Olen Butler (রবার্ট অলেন বার্টলার ‘Health & Home’ লিখেছেন).

5. 57 page is of the fourth chapter and Sean T. Kelly is the writer (৫৭ নম্বর পৃষ্ঠাটি চতুর্থ অধ্যায়ের এবং এটির লেখক হলেন সেন টি. কেলি).

F. Worn in pairs (দু-জনে কাজ কর). Use your own English textbook (তোমার নিজের পাঠ্যবই ব্যবহার কর). Ask and answer questions as above to know about page numbers, topic, units and lessons (পৃষ্ঠা নম্বর, বিষয়, অধ্যায় এবং পাঠ সম্পর্কে জানার জন্য উপরের মত প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা কর এবং উত্তর দাও).

Answer:

Mampa : The page number for the unit Games and Sports is 66 (Games and Sports এর পৃষ্ঠা নম্বর হলো ৬৬).

Myself : How many lessons in unit 2 (২ নং অধ্যায়ে কতগুলো পাঠ আছে)?

Mampa : There are two lessons in unit 2 (২ নং অধ্যায়ে ২টি পাঠ আছে).

Myself : What is the name of the topic of the unit 8 (৮ নং অধ্যায়ের বিষয়ের নাম কি)?

Mampa : The name of the topic of the unit 8 is Likes and Dislikes (৮ নং অধ্যায়ের বিষয়ের নাম হলো Likes and Dislikes).
