The Selfish Giant (1) – স্বার্থপর দৈত্য (১)

A. Look at the picture (ছবিটির দিকে তাকাও). Answer these questions (এই প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দাও).

1. Who do you think these people are (তোমার মতে এই মানুষগুলো কারা)?

2. Where can they be (তারা কোথায় হতে পারে)?

3. Can you guess what they are doing (তুমি কি ধারণা করতে পার তারা কি করছে)?

Answer:

1. I think these people belong to a family (আমি মনে করি এই লোকেরা একটি পরিবারের অন্তর্ভুক্ত).

2. They are in a yard (তারা একটি উঠানে আছে).

3. I think they are listening story (আমার মনে হয় তারা গল্প শুনছে).

B. Read the story silently (নীরবে গল্পটি পড়).

Shima's grandfather was telling the story of the Selfish Giant in the family gathering (পারিবারিক আড্ডায় শিমার দাদা স্বার্থপর দৈত্যের গল্প বলছিলেন). Grandma refused to go to bed (ঠাকুরমা ঘুমাতে যেতে অনীহা দেখালেন). She forgot her back pain (তিনি তার পিঠ ব্যথার কথা ভুলে গেলেন).

The Selfish Giant – স্বার্থপর দৈত্য

It was a large lovely garden with soft green grass (নরম সবুজ ঘাস সহ একটি বড় মনোরম বাগান ছিল). Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers (এদিক ওদিক ঘাসের ওপরে সুন্দর ফুল ফুটেছিল). Also there were fruit trees around the garden (এছাড়াও বাগানের চারপাশে ফলের গাছ ছিল).

One day the Giant came back (একদিন দৈত্য ফিরে এল). He went to see his friend in a distant land and stayed with them for seven years (সে তার বন্ধুকে দেখতে দূর দেশে গিয়েছিল এবং তাদের সাথে সাত বছর অবস্থান করেছিল). When he arrived, he saw children playing in his garden (সে যখন পৌছাল দেখল শিশুরা তার বাগানে খেলছে).

''What are you doing here?" cried the Giant in a very gruff voice ("তোমরা এখানে কি করছ?" দৈত্য চিৎকার করে বললো খুব বিরক্তিকর কণ্ঠে). The children ran away (শিশুরা পালিয়ে গেল).

Every afternoon the children came back from school and used to go and play in the Giant's garden (প্রতিদিন বিকেলে ছেলেমেয়েরা স্কুল থেকে ফিরে দৈত্যের বাগানে গিয়ে খেলত).

“My own garden is my own garden" said the Giant ("আমার নিজের বাগান হচ্ছে আমার নিজের বাগান" দৈত্য বলল). "Anyone can understand that And I will allow nobody else to play in it ("যে কেউ  এটা বুঝতে পারে এবং আমি এতে অন্য কাউকে খেলতে দেব না)." So he built a high wall all round the garden and put up a notice (তাই সে বাগানের চারদিকে একটি উঁচু প্রাচীর তৈরি করে নোটিশ লাগিয়ে দিল): “TRESPASSERS WILL BE PUNISHED(অনুপ্রবেশকারীদের শাস্তি দেওয়া হবে).”

C. Discuss in groups and answer the question (গ্রুপে আলোচনা কর এবং প্রশ্নটির উত্তর দাও):

How do you know that the giant is selfish (তুমি কি করে জান যে দৈত্যটি স্বার্থপর)?

Group Discussion (দলগতভাবে আলোচনা):

Group A: A selfish person always thinks of himself (একজন স্বার্থপর মানুষ সবসময় নিজের কথাই ভাবে). He never cares about others (সে কখনই অন্যের কথা চিন্তা করে না). The Giant is selfish (দৈত্যটি স্বার্থপর). He does not allow the children to play in his garden (সে তার বাগানে বাচ্চাদের খেলতে দেয় না).

Group B: You are right (তুমি সঠিক বলেছ). The Giant builds a wall around the garden to protect the children entering into his garden (দৈত্য তার বাগানে প্রবেশ করা শিশুদের রক্ষা করার জন্য বাগানের চারপাশে একটি প্রাচীর তৈরি করে).

Group C: He also puts up a notice “Trespassers will be punished (তিনি একটি নোটিশও রেখেছেন “অনুপ্রবেশকারীদের শাস্তি দেওয়া হবে).” And all these activities prove that the giant is selfish (এবং এই সমস্ত কার্যকলাপ প্রমাণ করে যে দৈত্যটি স্বার্থপর).

Answer:

After reading the story and discussion in groups, I saw that the giant did not allow the children to play in his garden (গল্পটি পড়া এবং দলে দলে আলোচনার পর আমি দেখলাম যে, দৈত্যটি তার বাগানে বাচ্চাদের খেলার অনুমতি দেয়নি). So he is selfish (তাই সে স্বার্থপর).  

D. Have you ever seen any garden or park (তুমি কি কখনও কোন বাগান বা পার্ক দেখেছ?)? Where is it (এটা কোথায়)? Describe it using the following clues (নিম্নলিখিত সূত্র ব্যবহার করে এটি বর্ণনা কর):

how big (কত বড়)

trees---flowers and fruits (গাছ---ফুল এবং ফল)

play corner (খেলার জায়গা)

any other attractions (অন্য কোন আকর্ষণ)

Answer:

Yes, I saw a large and beautiful garden (হ্যাঁ, আমি একটি বড় এবং সুন্দর বাগান দেখেছি). It was in a college campus (এটি ছিল একটি কলেজ ক্যাম্পাসে). The garden was really beautiful (বাগানটা সত্যিই সুন্দর ছিল). There were many trees full of flowers (সেখানে ফুলে ভরা অনেক গাছ ছিল). Near the garden, there was a small play corner for the children (বাগানের কাছে, শিশুদের জন্য একটি ছোট খেলার জায়গা ছিল). The fence of the garden was built with soft trees (নরম গাছ দিয়ে বাগানের বেড়া তৈরি করা হয়েছিল). There were many benches in the garden for sitting (বাগানে বসার জন্য অনেকগুলো বেঞ্চ ছিল).

Note:

Trespasser: a person who enters somebody's land without their permission (একজন ব্যক্তি কারো জমিতে তাদের অনুমতি ছাড়া প্রবেশ করে).

Gruff: harsh; unfriendly (কর্কশ/বন্ধুত্বহীন).
