The Selfish Giant (4) – স্বার্থপর দৈত্য (৪)
A. Continue reading the story (গল্পটি পড়া চালিয়ে যাও).
The giant felt sorry as he looked out (দৈত্য বাইরে তাকিয়ে দুঃখিত হলো). "How selfish I have been!" he said to himself ("আমি কতটা স্বার্থপর ছিলাম!" সে মনে মনে বলল). "Now I know why the spring would not come here ("এখন আমি জানি বসন্ত কেন এখানে আসত না)."
So, he quickly went out into the garden (তাই সে দ্রুত বাগানে চলে গেল). But when the children saw him they were so frightened that they all ran away and the garden became winter again (কিন্তু শিশুরা তাকে দেখে এত ভয় পেল যে তারা সবাই পালিয়ে গেল এবং বাগান আবার শীতল হয়ে গেল). Only the little boy did not run, for his eyes were so full of tears that he did not see the giant coming (শুধু ছোট ছেলেটি দৌড়ায়নি, কারণ তার চোখ এতই অশ্রুতে ভরা ছিল যে সে দৈত্যটিকে আসতে দেখেনি). The giant quietly came behind him, took him gently in his hands and put him up into the tree (দৈত্যটি নিঃশব্দে তার পিছনে এল, তাকে আলতো করে তার হাতে নিল এবং গাছে তুলে দিল). The other children saw this (অন্য শিশুরা এটা দেখল). They saw that the giant was not wicked any longer (তারা দেখল যে দৈত্যটি আর দুষ্ট নয়). So, they came running back (তাই, তারা দৌড়ে ফিরে আসল). And with them came the spring (এবং তাদের সাথে বসন্তও ফিরে এল).
'1t's your garden now, little children," said the Giant ('এখন এটা তোমাদের বাগান, ছোট বাচ্চারা,' দৈত্য বলল). Then he took a huge axe and knocked the wall down (তারপর সে একটি বিশাল কুড়াল নিয়ে প্রাচীরে ধাক্কা দিল). Answer:
1. When did he understood that the spring did not come because of his selfishness, he felt sorry (যখন সে বুঝল যে বসন্ত তার স্বার্থপরতার কারনে আসেনি, সে দুঃখ অনুভব করল).
2. When the Giant entered into the garden, the children ran away out of fear and then it became winter again (যখন দৈত্য বাগানে প্রবেশ করল, বাচ্চারা ভয়ে পালিয়ে গেল এবং তারপরে আবার শীতল হয়ে গেল).

7. The Giant’s garden was the most beautiful because there was spring and a happy environment in the garden as well as the children played merrily in it (দৈত্যের গার্ডেনটি সবচেয়ে সুন্দর ছিল কারণ বাগানে বসন্ত এবং আনন্দের পরিবেশ ছিল এবং সেই সাথে বাচ্চারা আনন্দে খেলত).

Yesterday I met a six-foot man in the lift of our office (গতকাল আমাদের অফিসের লিফটে একজন ছয় ফুটের লোকের সাথে দেখা হয়েছিল). I was a little frightened (আমি একটু ভয় পেয়ে গেলাম). But he flung a hand and said hello (কিন্তু তিনি একটি হাত ছুঁড়ে দিয়ে হ্যালো বললেন). I too stretched mine and we shook hands (আমিও আমার হাত বাড়িয়ে দিলাম এবং আমরা করমর্দন করলাম). Then he smilled and went towards the manager’s office, smilingly opened the door and set on the manager’s chair (তারপর মুচকি হেসে ম্যানেজারের অফিসের দিকে গেলেন, হাসিমুখে দরজা খুলে ম্যানেজারের চেয়ারে বসলেন). He was our new manager (তিনি আমাদের নতুন ম্যানেজার ছিলেন). I went inside and said, "Forgive me, Sir (আমি ভিতরে গিয়ে বললাম, আমাকে ক্ষমা করবেন স্যার). I didn't know (আমি জানতাম না). Story:
Once upon a time there was a Giant and he had a large lovely garden (এক সময় এক দৈত্য ছিল এবং তার একটি বড় সুন্দর বাগান ছিল). But the Giant was selfish in nature (কিন্তু দৈত্য স্বভাবজাতভাবে স্বার্থপর ছিল). When the Giant come back to his home after seven years visiting his friend from a distance place, he found that children were playing in his garden (দূর থেকে তার বন্ধুর সাথে দেখা করার সাত বছর পর দৈত্যটি যখন তার বাড়িতে ফিরে আসে, তখন সে দেখতে পায় যে শিশুরা তার বাগানে খেলছে). He drove them away and built a wall so that they could not enter (সে তাদের তাড়িয়ে দিল এবং একটি প্রাচীর নির্মাণ করল যাতে তারা প্রবেশ করতে না পারে). At due time the spring came (যথা সময়ে বসন্ত এল). All over the country there were flowers and birds (সারা দেশে ছিল ফুল আর পাখি). Only in the Giant’s garden there was still winter (শুধুমাত্র দৈত্যের বাগানে তখনও শীত ছিল). The Giant got worried and began to think (দৈত্য চিন্তিত হয়ে ভাবতে লাগল). One morning when he was lying awake in his bed, he heard out lovely sound (একদিন সকালে বিছানায় জেগে শুয়ে থাকা অবস্থায় সে মধুর শব্দ শুনতে পেল). He found that the spring came back as the children crept in the garden through a little hole (সে দেখতে পেল বসন্ত ফিরে এসেছে যেহেতু বাচ্চারা ছোট একটা গর্ত দিয়ে বাগানে ঢুকেছে). Then the Giant realized his fault (তারপর দৈত্য তার দোষ বুঝতে পারল). So he quietly went into the garden (তাই সে চুপচাপ বাগানে চলে গেল). Seeing him all the children ran away (তাকে দেখে শিশুরা সবাই পালিয়ে গেল). Only the little boy remained there (সেখানে শুধু ছোট ছেলেটিই রইল). Going to him, the Giant took him gently in his hands and put up into the tree (তার কাছে গিয়ে দৈত্য তাকে আলতো করে হাতে নিয়ে গাছে তুলে দিল). Seeing this, the children came back and with them the spring came (তা দেখে শিশুরা ফিরে এল এবং তাদের সঙ্গে বসন্তও এল). So, at last the garden turned into the most beautiful garden in the country (তাই, অবশেষে বাগানটি দেশের সবচেয়ে সুন্দর বাগানে পরিণত হল).

When the selfish Giant drove them away from his garden, the Creator became displeased at him (স্বার্থপর দৈত্য তাদের তার বাগান থেকে তাড়িয়ে দিলে সৃষ্টিকর্তা তার প্রতি অসন্তুষ্ট হন). The Creator took away the beauty from Giant’s garden (সৃষ্টিকর্তা দৈত্যের বাগান থেকে সৌন্দর্য কেড়ে নিলেন).
Group 1: And he was punished enough (এবং তাকে যথেষ্ট শাস্তি দেওয়া হয়েছিল). At last he could realize his fault (অবশেষে সে তার দোষ বুঝতে পারল). He was no more selfish (সে আর স্বার্থপর রইল না).
Group 3: There should be a moral of story (গল্পটির একটি নীতিকথা থাকা উচিৎ).
Group 2: It may be, “Selfishness brings sufferings (এটা হতে পারে, "স্বার্থপরতা কষ্ট নিয়ে আসে).”
Group 5: I think so (আমিও এমনটি মনে করি).
