Occupations    Lessons 1-2

A. Listen and read (শোন ও পড়).

A long time ago, when Raju was in Class 5, there was a fire in his school (অনেক দিন আগে, রাজু যখন পঞ্চম শ্রেণিতে পড়ত, তখন তার স্কুলে আগুন লেগেছিল). Everyone was very afraid, but no one panicked (সবাই খুব ভয় পেয়েছিল, কিন্তু কেউ আতঙ্কিত ছিল না). The teachers helped the students to leave the building quietly and safely (শিক্ষকরা শিক্ষার্থীদের শান্তভাবে এবং নিরাপদে বিল্ডিং ছেড়ে যেতে সহায়তা করেছিলেন). Soon the firefighters came and put out the fire (কিছুক্ষণের মধ্যেই দমকলকর্মীরা এসে আগুন নিভিয়ে ফেলেন). Raju watched the firefighters from the school yard (রাজু বিদ্যালয়ের উঠোন থেকে দমকলকর্মীদের দেখছিল). He thought about the fire and the firefighters for a long time (সে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে আগুন এবং অগ্নিনির্বাপকদের কথা ভেবেছিল). After college, Raju joined a volunteer fire department (কলেজের পরে, রাজু একটি স্বেচ্ছাসেবক ফায়ার ডিপার্টমেন্টে যোগ দেয়). As a volunteer, he didn't get any money for his work (একজন স্বেচ্ছাসেবক হিসাবে, সে তার কাজের জন্য কোনও অর্থ পায়নি). But Raju didn't mind (কিন্তু রাজু কিছু মনে করল না).

Now Raju is a full-time firefighter (এখন রাজু একজন পূর্ণ-কালীন অগ্নিনির্বাপক). It is his job, so he earns money for it (এটি তার কাজ, তাই সে এটির জন্য অর্থ উপার্জন করে). Most of the time his work is putting out fires, but he also teaches new firefighters about safety (বেশিরভাগ সময় তার কাজ আগুন নিভিয়ে দিচ্ছে, তবে সে নিরাপত্তা সম্পর্কে নতুন অগ্নিনির্বাপকদেরও শিক্ষা দেয়). He likes teaching very much (সে শিক্ষকতা করতে খুব পছন্দ করে). In his free time, Raju visits schools (তার অবসর সময়ে, রাজু স্কুলগুলি পরিদর্শন করে). He talks to students about fire safety (সে অগ্নি নিরাপত্তা সম্পর্কে শিক্ষার্থীদের সাথে কথা বলে). He tells them what to do if there is a fire (সে তাদের বলে, আগুন লাগলে কী করতে হবে). They shouldn't panic (তাদের আতঙ্কিত হওয়া উচিত নয়). They should listen to their teachers and leave the building quietly (তাদের উচিত তাদের শিক্ষকদের কথা শোনা এবং নিঃশব্দে বিল্ডিং ছেড়ে চলে যাওয়া).

B. Read again (পুনরায় পড়). Write T for True or F for False (সত্য হলে T এবং মিথ্যা হলে F লিখ).

1. There was a fire at Raju's school when he was in Class 5 (পঞ্চম শ্রেণিতে পড়ার সময় রাজুর স্কুলে আগুন লেগেছিল).

D. Groupwork (দলগত কাজ). Why do you think Raju became a firefighter (কেন রাজু একজন দলকলকর্মী হলো ব্লে তুমি মনে করো)?

Answer:

Mina: I think Raju was inspired by the firefighter’ job (আমি মনে করি রাজু অগ্নিনির্বাপকের কাজ থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েছিল).

Raju: I think the incident of fire had a deep mark on his mind (আমি মনে করি আগুনের ঘটনাটি তার মনে গভীর ছাপ ফেলেছিল).

Mitu: I think Raju likes unique job (আমি মনে করি রাজু অনন্য ধরনের কাজ পছন্দ করে). That’s why he has chosen a firefighter’s job (এই কারণেই সে একজন অগ্নিনির্বাপকের কাজ বেছে নিয়েছে).

Language Focus (ভাষা ব্যবহার)

E. Occupation nouns from verbs (verb থেকে তৈরি occupation noun)

Sometimes we can add -er or -or to a verb to make a noun (কখনো কখনো আমরা Noun তৈরি করতে verb এর সাথে –er কিংবা –or যোগ করি). This noun is the occupation related to the verb (এই noun হচ্ছে verb এর সাথে সম্পৃক্ত occupation বা পেশা).

She sings (সে গান গায়).

She is a singer (তিনি একজন সঙ্গীতশিল্পী).

F. Pairwork (জোড়ায় জোড়ায়.কাজ). Write the questions or answers in your exercise book (তোমার অনুশীলন বইয়ে প্রশ্ন বা উত্তর লিখ). Ask and answer the questions (প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা কর এবং উত্তর দাও).

Examples:

H. Write a composition about someone you know by answering the following questions (নিম্নলিখিত প্রশ্নগুলির উত্তর দিয়ে তোমার পরিচিত কারও সম্পর্কে একটি রচনা লিখ).

1. What is the person's name (সেই লোকের নাম কি)?

2. What does he/she do (তিনি কী করেন)?

3. Where does he/she work (তিনি কোথায় কাজ করেন)?

4. What time does he/she start work (তিনি কখন কাজ শুরু করেন)?

5. Does he/she like his/her job (সে কি তার পেশা পছন্দ করে)? Why or why not (কেন বা কেন নয়)?

A Person I Know (আমার পরিচিত এক ব্যক্তি)

Mr. Kamal Hossain is my familiar person (জনাব কামাল হোসেন আমার পরিচিত ব্যক্তি।). He is an actor (তিনি একজন অভিনেতা). He works at different places with many directors (তিনি অনেক পরিচালকের সাথে বিভিন্ন জায়গায় কাজ করেন). He often goes to the studios at about 9 AM in order to act (তিনি অভিনয় করার জন্য প্রায়শই সকাল ৯টার দিকে স্টুডিওতে যান). He likes his job very much, because he has makes people happy and entertained with his enjoyable performance (তিনি তার কাজটি খুব পছন্দ করেন, কারণ তিনি তার উপভোগ্য অভিনয় দিয়ে মানুষকে খুশি এবং বিনোদন দেন).

Language Focus (ভাষা ব্যবহার)

I. Capital letter, full stop (.) and question mark (?) [বড় হাতের অক্ষর, পূর্নচ্ছেদ ও প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন]

We use capital letter (আমরা বড় হাতের অক্ষর ব্যবহার করি)…

● at the beginning of every sentence (প্রত্যেক বাক্যের শুরুতে).

● for names of people, places, days and months (মানুষ, স্থান, দিন ও মাসের নামের ক্ষেত্রে).

We use a full stop at the end of a sentence that (আমরা এমন কোনো বাক্যের শেষে full stop ব্যবহার করি যা)…

● tells something (কিছু বলে).

● gives a command (নির্দেশ দেয়).

● makes a statement (বিবৃতি দেয়).

We use a question mark at the end of a sentence that (আমরা এমন একটি বাক্যের শেষে Question mark ব্যবহার করি যা)…

● asks for information (তথ্য জানতে চায়).

J. Correct the sentences (বাক্যগুলো ঠিক করে লিখ). Rewrite them correctly using cursive handwriting (বাঁকা হস্তাক্ষর ব্যবহার করে সেগুলি সঠিকভাবে পুনরায় লিখুন).

K. Pairwork (জোড়ায়.জোড়ায়.কাজ). Read the composition that your partner wrote in Activity H (তোমার সঙ্গী কাজ এইচ-এ যে রচনাটি লিখেছেন তা পড়). Check for correct use of capital letters and full stops (বড় অক্ষর এবং পূর্ণচ্ছেদ সঠিক ব্যবহারের জন্য পরীক্ষা কর).
