A. Look at the pictures and talk with your partner about them. Then read the text. 

 

Most of these ethnic people living in Bangladesh have some common characteristics. বাংলাদেশে বসবাসকারী এই নৃ-গোষ্ঠীর অধিকাংশেরই কিছু সাধারণ বৈশিষ্ট্য রয়েছে। They have their own lifestyles. তাদের নিজস্ব জীবনধারা আছে। 

They build their houses on bamboo or wooden platforms called machang. মাচাং নামক বাঁশ বা কাঠের প্লাটফর্মে তারা ঘর তৈরি করে । Rice is their staple food. ভাত তাদের প্রধান খাদ্য । They eat vegetables, maize and fish, poultry and meat. তারা শাকসবজি, ভুট্টা এবং মাছ, মুরগি এবং মাংস খায়। Their kitchen utensils are bamboo, wooden and earthen pots which they make themselves. তাদের রান্নাঘরের পাত্র বাঁশ, কাঠ ও মাটির হাঁড়ি তারা নিজেরাই তৈরি করে । Men wear lungis and women wear thamis or sarongs and angis.পুরুষরা লুঙ্গি পরে এবং মহিলারা থামিস বা সারং এবং অ্যাঙ্গিস পরে । Women weave their own clothes. মহিলারা নিজেদের পোশাক নিজেরাই বুনেন।

Hunting and fishing are their favourite pastimes. শিকার এবং মাছ ধরা তাদের প্রিয় বিনোদন। They are fond of songs, music, dances, theatre and fairs. তারা গান, সঙ্গীত, নাচ, নাট্য এবং মেলার অনুরাগী । Traditional musical instruments used are bugles made from buffalo horns, drums and bamboo flutes. Wrestling is a popular sport for them. ব্যবহৃত ঐতিহ্যবাহী বাদ্যযন্ত্র হল মহিষের শিং, ঢোল এবং বাঁশের বাঁশি থেকে তৈরি বাদ্যযন্ত্র। তাদের কাছে কুস্তি একটি জনপ্রিয় খেলা।

D. Imagine you are Sajeed and you have a Marma friend called Masing. Now write a dialogue asking and answering questions about dress, food, songs, sports and pastimes of both of you.
Answer : 

Sajid : Hi, Masing! How are you?

Masing : I'm fine. Thank you. And how are you?

Sajid : I'm also fine. Thank you. Masing, I want to know about you and your community. Can you answer me some question?

Masing : Certainly.

Sajid :  What do the marma men and women wear?

Masing :  The marma women wear thamis or sarongs and angis and men wear lungi. 

Sajid : What is your staple food?

Masing : Our staple food is rice. 

Sajid : Do you like songs?

Masing : Yes. We have lots of songs in our own mother language. 

Sajid : What are the marma's favourite sports? 

Masing : Wrestling is a popular sport for marma. 

Sajid : What are the favourite pastimes of marma?

Masing : Hunting and fishing are the favourite pastimes of marma. 

Sajid : I gained a lot of knowledge about marma from you. Thank you very much. 

Masing : It's my pleasure to inform you about my community.
